On June 8 in Beijing, CNNIC, allied with members of IP Address Allocation Alliance, operators and service providers of basic Internet resources, domain name registration service agencies, jointly held “Summit Forum for Advancing the Disposition of Basic Internet Resources IPv6”. The attending representatives jointly executed “Beijing Declaration on the Disposition of Basic Internet Resources IPv6” at the summit forum and made promises to jointly move forward the sustainable, fast and healthy development of basic Internet resources, and advance the Chinese Internet to step into the application time of IPv6 steadily.
Advancing the disposition of IPv6 to meet the requirements of national informatization development
The data reveals that our country only has 429 blocks of IPv6 addresses (/32), globally ranking No. 15. It is far behind such countries as Brazil, America, Japan and Germany etc. Currently, the only remaining IPv4 addresses can barely be used for one through two years as predicted. Except for address resources, the development of current IPv6 network in China has still been in the early stage in respect of application and it hasn’t entered into the stage of wide disposition and implementation. The industrial chains of IPv6 have still been imperfect, which are now in the industry formation and developing period.
The outline of the national “Twelfth Five-year Plan” explicitly pointed out, “accelerate the construction of the broadband, integrated, safe and ubiquitous next-generation national information infrastructure, move forward the deep integration of informatization and industrialization, and advance the informatization in various fields of the economy and the society”. The Ministry of Industry and Information also stated clearly that the first choice of next-generation Internet IPv6 will be the key construction project during the period of the “Twelfth Five-year Plan” when “Decision of the State Council on Accelerating the Fostering and Development of Strategic Emerging Industries” was released in December, 2010.
The national domain name service system made primary preparations to cope with the transition to the IPv6 time
It is understood that the application of IPv6 needs the nation’s united disposition, which involves the joint advancement of several parties such as service providers of basic resources, operators, equipment suppliers, and content providers, etc. Domain names and IP addresses, as the basic Internet resources, are the foundations to build the next-generation Internet, which are of great importance in the application of IPv6. The member of expert committee of China's Next Generation Internet (CNGI) Mao Wei opines, “The next-generation Internet domain name platform based on IPv6 address resources will be the infrastructure guarantee of the national construction of the next-generation Internet and the advancement of the development of strategic emerging industries”.
The Progress of the basic Internet resources IPv6 mainly lies in the domains’ registration and resolution procedures which can support IPv6 addresses as well as the overall planning of the allocating principles and methods of IPv6 addresses. With the transition from the top-level domain names to IPv6 gradually launched, our country’s basic Internet resources also starts to cope with this transition. Our ccTLD has already begun to support the IPv6 addresses in various procedures such as registration and resolution, etc. As early as 2004, the IPv6 addresses of CN domain name server has already been written into the DNS Root Servers and the CN ccTLD has officially supported the resolution of the visit from the IPv6 network.
The preparation of constructing the platform for the next-generation basic Internet resources
In the course of further disposition of our basic Internet resources IPv6, CNNIC allied itself with the community to jointly launch the construction of “the service platform for the next-generation basic Internet resources”. The service platform for the next-generation basic Internet resources will first move forward the national domain name service system to fully support IPv6, build the directory database of national basic Internet resources, and carry out IPv6 addresses allocating planning and open-ended research on the technology of next-generation basic Internet resources based on this service platform. Such a platform will provide a safe, steady and efficient service of basic resources to the national next-generation Internet.
The attending representatives put forth the planning framework of allocating IPv6 addresses in China for the first time. They proposed to adopt the principle of making ICANN and RIR addresses allocation policies compatible. Make use of address prefix taking along address ascription information to guarantee the degree of freedom, continuity and stability of the IPv6 business, and meet the need of recognizable and traceable IP addresses. Additionally, the summit forum probed the emerging networks’ research and development on new technologies of the next-generation Internet address, such as sensor network, Internet of things and ubiquitous network, etc.
